About Rostrevor College, Australia, South Australia

Nestled in the foothills of the Mount Lofty Ranges at Woodforde, just nine kilometres from the CBD, Rostrevor boasts exceptional facilities and expansive grounds spanning 16 hectares, allowing boys room to move.

As a Catholic School in the Edmund Rice tradition, our commitment to combining academic excellence with a well-rounded Catholic education, which explores and encourages each student's personal best, is our guiding passion.

With an educational offering spanning Reception to Year 12 on the one campus, our students benefit greatly through the use of shared facilities, including our unique agricultural and environmental facilities which provide our students with hands-on experience in all aspects of farming from aquaculture, animals and viticulture.

Our exceptional teaching expertise, inclusive and supportive learning environment and wide-ranging curriculum provides a holistic education incorporating both academic and co-curricular opportunities to suit every student's interest.

Above all, we pride ourselves on our tailored approach to boys' education which produces well-rounded, confident and outstanding young men who have gone on to be respected role models in their respective communities.

Rostrevor College is a school for boys in the Edmund Rice tradition.  Edmund gave up his flourishing business to devote himself to the poor and marginalised boys and people of Waterford, Ireland.

Rostrevor provides a holistic education that aims to allow young boys to flourish in all dimensions of their lives.  We do this through the recognition that boys must engage in opportunities that use their HEARTS, their HEADS and their HANDS.

Teaching Expertise: Our teachers are the lifeblood of Rostrevor College.

Their passion for Rostrevor, together with their core subject areas, and genuine respect and commitment to the growth and development of each individual student is unwavering.

Our students and teachers enjoy a relationship based on mutual respect, which helps to foster an inclusive and caring learning environment to allow students to achieve their personal best.

From our English faculty through to Technology and Music, Rostrevor’s teaching community are among the most respected in their fields, as demonstrated by their broader contribution to the subject area.

Academic staff at Rostrevor are encouraged to pursue professional learning opportunities. This includes attendance at national conferences, updating qualifications, membership to professional associations, and participation in SACE Board activities.

The College has implemented Professional Learning Groups. Teachers meet frequently to participate in professional reading and related discussions, classroom observation and coaching activities, reviewing of policies and processes when necessary and to share best practice regarding teaching strategies that improve learning outcomes.

Teachers are provided with opportunities, resources and tools to gather evidence at appropriate career stages against the National Professional Standards for Teachers. The aim of the National Professional Standards for Teachers is to describe the key elements of quality teaching and articulate what teachers are expected to know and be able to do at four career stages: Graduate, Proficient, Highly Accomplished and Lead.

The seven standards cover the following:

  • Know students and how they learn
  • Know the content and how to teach it
  • Plan for and implement effective teaching and learning
  • Create and maintain supportive and safe learning environments
  • Assess, provide feedback and report on student learning
  • Engage in professional learning
  • Engage professionally with colleagues, parents/carers and the community

The other aspect of best educational practice that we have introduced is to have our teaching staff observe each other’s lessons. The expectation is that someone within their Professional Learning Team will observe a teacher’s lesson and provide feedback, and, in turn, that observer will also have one of their own lessons observed at least once a Semester.

Spirituality

A key aspect of our context is to educate young men who will live their role as a Catholic in today's society.  Given that we now live in a culture of choice and diversity, we need to educate them thoroughly in the development of an informed conscience so that they can make mature decisions. They need to understand and be immersed in the scriptures, especially the Gospels, so that they come to realise what it means to follow Jesus.

Rostrevor encourages boys to follow Jesus as Edmund did by being aware of the marginalised through immersion experiences and the Service Learning program and hence, learning from them.

Stillness and meditation are essential steps to develop prayerfulness and reflection in their lives, while the Service Learning program encourages Faith In Action and teaches them to serve others. Given that for most of the boys, the school will be their main contact with Church, it is important to celebrate key aspects of school life with liturgies that are meaningful.  Staff need to be formed so that they are confident in sharing their faith with students.

Our Religious Education program and the extended Religious dimension of the College include Retreats and opportunities for personal reflection, are just as strong and relevant today as they have ever been.

Facilities

Boys are physical and competitive and thus, co-curricular activities are an important component of the school.  Music, Drama and the Arts help to develop the creative dimension of the boys.

Rostrevor prides itself on the diversity and quality of its co-curricular program. The College's sporting reputation is particularly significant and this is equally matched by the growing success experienced by our Music program. Recent national awards have highlighted the breadth and depth of this program.

The significant number of both State and National awards won by students from Rostrevor across all areas of our co-curricular program are too numerous to mention, however, in recent years, achievements include State Titles in; Football, Cricket, Soccer, Rugby 7's, Cycling, Golf, Squash, Cross- Country Running and Public Speaking.

Boarding

Being just 15 minutes from Adelaide's CBD gives boarders a sense of home whilst being a stones throw away from a world of opportunities. With an unrivalled outlook across the ovals to the hills, Duggan House acts as a 'home away from home' for around 90 students from all corners of the state, throughout Australia and across the globe.

The boarding community at Rostrevor, like the College itself, adopts a holistic approach to the care of the boys. Whilst we take every effort to ensure that academic and co-curricular opportunities are maximised, we also have a mind for the spiritual side of their development. As we believe that a valuable part of our role here in Duggan House is to ensure that boys have the chance to learn from their experiences and to grow into young men. We constantly encourage them to be the best they can be and do the best they can do with the talents they have.

The boys are given the best care possible thanks to our dedicated chef who keeps the boys fed with nutritious and hearty meals, our supervisors who support the boys with their studies and act as mentors and full-time housemother who provides a range of support and assistance.

In addition to the wide range of facilities and opportunities we offer our boarders through the boarding house, we also accommodate the learning interests of many regional students with our agricultural and environmental studies curriculum, including our own on-campus farm and environmental centre, aquaculture facility and vineyard.

Our boarding house facilities also include:

  • Semi -divided bedrooms for Years 7-9
  • Individaul bedrooms for Years 10-12
  • Fully equipped kitchen
  • Communal dining area
  • Laundry facilities
  • Living rooms with television and Foxtel
  • Common rooms for indoor recreation
  • Desktop and laptop computers
  • Well equipped sick bay and first aid room
  • Pool, table tennis and soccer tables for recreational use
  • Prayer room.

History

Rostrevor College has a history of boarding students from rural and remote areas dating back to 1923. In fact, the College was founded to take boarding students from CBC Wakefield Street, which could no longer adequately cater for the increasing number of boys who wanted to board.

Duggan House, was named after Matron Monica Duggan who was Matron at the College for over 30 years until the 1980's. In 1984 boarding was closed at Rostrevor but re-opened with a new, state-of-the-art building in 1991. In 2008 extensions were built which increased the capacity of the building from 77 boys to 90.

Program

The school motto, 'Palma Merenti', encourages each boy to strive to be the best he can in every aspect of school life. Of course, this means each student should reach his academic potential, become responsible members of the community and be self-motivated and reflective lifelong learners.

We encourage and develop 21st Century skills - skills that respond to and integrate new technologies and our students' engagement with it. Today, more information than ever is at students' fingertips, but it takes skill to understand and connect it to prior learning.  Familiar with technology and expecting to have a voice in their learning, students are more than ever in need of problem-solving, critical thinking and communication skills.

Our curriculum is particularly diverse and caters for all needs of each and every student.  Flexibility is built into the education cycles in order to cater for those who strive for pre-university courses as well as a thorough VET pathway. The VET courses are accredited programs for senior secondary students that focus on particular career pathway areas.  Rostrevor College has become a lead school of the Eastern Adelaide region in the delivery of VET programs.

These courses are delivered on a part-time basis and are accessed by Rostrevor College students and significant numbers of students from other schools.

A high priority for Rostrevor is the area of Professional Development of and for the staff.

Academic Achievements

The College is extremely proud of the 2015 cohort of Rostrevor Year 12 students for their efforts and accomplishments, and of course our teachers who have helped to guide and foster such outstanding results.

It is great to see that 30% of our students have achieved an ATAR score of 90 and above. Equally pleasing was the fact that 58% of our students achieved ATAR scores of 80 and above. Both these results are the best for Rostrevor since records began in 2005.

Particular congratulations to our 2015 Dux, Isaac Nakone who achieved 99.95. Isaac also received a Governor's Commendation Award. He was closely followed by our Proxime Accessit, Darcy Pisani who achieved 99.35. Overall our students achieved 16 merits across a wide spread of subjects, including Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Psychology, English, Accounting, Scientific Studies, Research Project and Physical Education.

Our students have continued to improve in other areas which is very pleasing. For example 99% of all subject scores were either A, B or C, with a 28% achievement of A's and 71% achievement of A's and B's.

It is also excellent to note that 12 students who completed full Certificate III's in Vocational Education & Training as part of their senior secondary studies at Rostrevor have had their VET results recognised as Stage 2 ATAR accredited subjects.

At Rostrevor College we encourage and inspire our boys to achieve their personal best as we believe it's the best measure of success. Particularly in this 'Year of Opportunities' the level of dedication that our Year 12 cohort has demonstrated towards their studies is outstanding and has been reflected in their results. We wish all our students the very best for the future and thank them for continuing to advance Rostrevor College's strong academic reputatio
