One of Scotland’s largest and best performing schools, Dollar Academy prides itself in providing an education that meets the highest standards. We are a day and boarding school for boys and girls aged five to eighteen.
Overview
There are over 1250 pupils at Dollar Academy, making it the fourth largest independent school in Scotland. On a single campus, it is divided into three separate schools: the Prep School (Preps I to V for ages 5–10), the Junior School (Juniors I and II for ages 10–12) and the Senior School (Forms I to VI for ages 12 going on 18).
Around 100 of the pupils are boarders; the rest are day pupils, either from the village of Dollar itself or from the surrounding counties of Clackmannanshire, Stirlingshire, Perth and Kinross and Fife. Just 20% of the boarding pupils are from overseas, representing less than 4% of the total school roll. Foreign pupils come from a range of countries, including France, Spain, Germany, Russia, Ukraine, Romania, Bulgaria, Croatia, Moldova, as well as the United States and China. The remaining 80% of boarding students are British nationals.
Dollar Academy has over 70 sports and recreational activities on offer to pupils after the school day and over the weekend. Dollar Academy has produced international competitors across many disciplines, most notably in rugby and shooting.
What Makes Us Special
Our focus is very much on encouraging the individual talents, interests and ambitions of all our pupils. There are opportunities for every child at Dollar and each is provided with a positive and supportive environment in which to shine.
What We Think is Important
Enjoyment of learning lies at the heart of this school, and the aim is for all pupils to gain satisfaction from a real commitment to study. Expectations are high at Dollar Academy. We believe that young people rise to a challenge and flourish in a culture of ambition.
Dollar has a great academic reputation but a truly excellent education is about far more than that. We believe that activities out of class time are just as significant in the development of young people, and we pride ourselves on the great range of activities on offer to our pupils. This, together with the positive and friendly atmosphere, helps our pupils to develop the self-confidence, social skills and character that can contribute so much to success and happiness in later life.
Our History
Once below the Ochil Hills there was a broad meadow (Doll-ar in Gaelic). Then, through the final gift of one man, and the imaginative vision of some very determined men and women two hundred years ago, a great school took distinctive shape in the landscape. We hold an extensive archive collection of artifacts from Dollar Academy's 200-year history and we are always delighted to hear from former pupils and relatives.
Facilities
Dollar Academy has a single, 70-acre campus which is edged on one side by pretty rows of Georgian houses and on the other by an 18-hole golf course. We are surrounded by beautiful countryside and hills.
Our Buildings
The main school building is a striking neo-classical design by the eminent Scottish architect William Henry Playfair. The numerous other buildings on the school campus are a mixture of period and modern design, including separate school buildings for our Prep and Junior pupils, specialised teaching areas for Science, Music and Art, large performance venues and first-class accommodation for our boarders.
Facilities
The campus and facilities at Dollar Academy are very well-equipped, our teaching is excellent and our boarding facilities are first class. We are committed to providing the best possible environment for our pupils and we ensure that they all have access to the resources available.
This focus on quality is also very apparent in the particular approach we take towards looking after our pupils. Our staff are supportive and attentive to the aspirations and happiness of every child. We offer a very high level of care.
Our Sports Facilities
Dollar Academy has many acres of playing fields; these include grass and all-weather playing surfaces. The Ochil Hills begin literally at the back of the school, giving opportunities for outdoor expeditions, horse riding and cross-country running. Extensive indoor facilities complement our open-air provision, including a well-equipped fitness suite, swimming pool, rifle range, cricket nets, gym and sports hall.
We are very fortunate to be contained within a single campus and surrounded by our facilities. Our pupils waste no time traveling to and from their lessons and games, and they can enjoy all the benefits of their peaceful and inspiring surroundings.
Boarding
We are the oldest co-educational boarding school in the UK. Since 1818 boarding pupils have made an impressive contribution to the school and are a defining feature of life at Dollar Academy.

Program
Prep & Junior School
The Prep and Junior Schools are located within the same campus as the Senior School and allow children to begin their Dollar education from the age of five. Our Prep School looks after the first years of primary education (from P1 to P5) and our Junior School takes children through the last two years before Senior School (P6 to P7). Our Junior School plays an important transitional role in preparing our pupils for their move to Senior School.
Within these safe yet stimulating environments children are able to learn and encouraged to develop their confidence, interests and abilities as widely as possible. While the emphasis within the classroom is in giving our pupils a solid grounding in all aspects of English and Mathematics, their learning is based around a broad curriculum which benefits from specialist teaching in Art, Music and P.E. from Primary 1 onwards.
Wherever possible, we take learning out of the primary classroom and into other parts of the school, taking advantage of the superb facilities and beautiful grounds.
We take pride in fostering good manners and politeness and we have high expectations for behaviour and achievement. From this firm foundation children are equipped to make a seamless transition through school.
Senior School
Firmly grounded in the strengths of a broad Scottish education, pupils undertake internationally recognised Scottish examination courses.
High-quality teaching is important here, and all pupils benefit from the wide range of subject choices and the excellent resources and facilities available.
Beyond School
Our focus is on providing our pupils with a happy and productive time at Dollar Academy, whilst also preparing them for their future.
