In Northern Thailand, Chiang Mai is the largest city. Chiang Mai Province is the capital of Chiang Mai. Chiang Mai was a former capital of the Kingdom of Lan Na (1296–1768), which became the Kingdom of Chiang Mai, a tributary state of Siam from 1774 to 1899 and finally the seat of a merely ceremonial prince until 1939. It is 700 km (435 mi) to the north of Bangkok and is situated among the highest mountains in the country. Chiang Mai means "new city" and was so named because it became the new capital of the Lan Na kingdom when it was founded in 1296, succeeding Chiang Rai, the former capital founded in 1262. The city is divided into four wards: Nakhon Ping, Srivijaya, Mengrai, and Kawila. The first three are on the west bank of the Ping River, and Kawila is on the east bank. Nakhon Ping district constitutes the north part of the city. Srivijaya, Mengrai, and Kawila consist of the west, south, and east parts, respectively. Chiang Mai has a dry and tropical wet climate, tempered by the low latitude and moderate elevation, with warm to hot weather year-round, although nighttime conditions during the dry season are cool and much lower than daytime highs.

Chiang Mai is home to five universities, Buddhist and Christian seminaries, technical colleges, four international English language schools and one German one, a large university teaching hospital and several private ones, some with nursing schools. Many private language schools as well as the British Council, Australian, and New Zealand centers and the Alliance Francaise are there in Chiang Mai. Education in Chiang Mai is given mainly by the Thai government through the Ministry of Education from pre-school to senior high school. A free basic education of twelve years is guaranteed by the constitution, and a minimum of nine years' school attendance is compulsory. The literacy rate in Chiang Mai is approximately 95.5%.
