Education in Wales
Education in Wales differs in some respects from education elsewhere in the United Kingdom. The study of the Welsh language is available to all age groups through nurseries, schools, colleges and universities and in adult education. Until the age of 16, the study of the language is compulsory for all pupils in State School. Education in Wales is compulsory from the ages of 5 to 16, with around 465,000 attending state schools. A significant number of students all over Wales are educated either wholly or largely through the medium of Welsh and lessons in the language are compulsory for all until the age of 16. Welsh medium education is available to all age groups from nursery through to schools, colleges, universities and adult education. According to an article published in September 2005, overall literacy rate was 88%, 12% of the populations as a whole do not meet level 1 of basic literary skills. Statutory teacher assessments are administered at the end of Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3, as in England, but students do not take Key Stage 2 National Curriculum Tests (Standard Attainment Tests, or SATs). All children in Wales from Y2 to Y9 have taken National Reading and Numeracy Tests as part to a new National Literacy and Numeracy Framework (LNF), since May 2013.Students take General Certificate of Secondary Education exams (GCSEs) during year 11, and have the choice to continue on to years 12 and 13 to sit A-level exams.
