Boarding Schools in Manitoba

Manitoba is a province at the center of Canada. It is Canada's fifth-most populous province with its estimated 1.3 million people. The province is adjoined by the provinces of Ontario to the east and Saskatchewan to the west, the territories of Nunavut to the north, and Northwest Territories to the northwest, and the US states of North Dakota and Minnesota to the south. Winnipeg is the Manitoba's capital and largest city, and it is Canada's eighth-largest census metropolitan area. Winnipeg is the seat of government, home to the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba and the Provincial Court. In Winnipeg, all four of its professional sports teams and four of the province's five universities are located. Manitoba has an extreme continental climate. Temperatures and precipitation generally decrease from south to north and increase from east to west. Manitoba's economy depends heavily on agriculture, tourism, energy, oil, mining, and forestry. Much wilderness is protected in more than 80 provincial parks, where hiking, biking, canoeing, camping, and fishing are all popular.

Education throughout Manitoba is governed by each provincial and territorial government, so there are slight differences between each province's education system. Education in Manitoba covers a multitude of levels and subjects in order to meet the needs of both local and international students. International students studying in Manitoba can pursue language courses, middle school programs, a high school diploma, a 2- to 3-year community college degree, a 4-year university degree or even graduate school. Study options include on-campus or online study, full-time or part-time. Educational institutions in Manitoba range from the small to the big, and can be private, public, all-girls, all-boys, discipline-specific, career-oriented, Christian, Catholic, secular, English, French (or both), and may be located in rural, urban or northern settings. Education is compulsory to the age of between 15 and 18, depending on the province. Children usually enter kindergarten at age 5. Elementary school generally includes grades 1 through 6 in regions that then have 2 years of middle school or junior high school, and in areas without these, elementary school goes up to grade 8. Secondary school, usually called high school, encompasses grades 9 through 12. In regions without middle school and junior high, it also includes grades 7 and 8. Post-secondary education in Manitoba includes career college (also known as vocational school), community college, university, and grad school.  Manitoba is divided into public school districts, which in turn have school boards (elected officials) that implement policy and provincial curriculum. A school district usually serves one or more cities or towns, depending on their size. Funding and registration for adult education is delivered through one Ministry—the Adult Learning and Literacy branch of Manitoba Multiculturalism and Literacy. Funding for and delivery of Essential Skills programming is provided through the Ministry of Jobs and the Economy.
