Boarding Schools in New Brunswick

New Brunswick is one of Canada's three Maritime provinces (along with Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia). It is the only province that is constitutionally bilingual (English–French). Fredericton is the capital city of New Brunswick. Greater Moncton is the largest city as well as the most populous city of the province. According to the Canada 2016 Census, Statistics Canada estimated the provincial population to have been 747,101, down very slightly from 751,171 in 2011, on an area of almost 73,000 km2. Most of the population is English-speaking of Anglo and Celtic heritage, but there is also a large Francophone minority (33%), chiefly of Acadian origin. With slightly milder winters on the Gulf of St. Lawrence coastline, New Brunswick has a humid continental climate all over the province. The far north of the province is just above subarctic region with very cold winters. Winters are colder than Nova Scotia all over the province because of the greater continental influence. Summers are often warm, sometimes hot.

Education in New Brunswick

The education system of New Brunswick is composed of public and private primary and secondary schools and post-secondary institutions.  By the British North America Act (part of the constitution of Canada), education falls completely under provincial jurisdiction. Federal government department or agencies are not involved in the formation or analysis of policy regarding education. Publicly funded elementary and secondary schools are administered by the Ministry of Education and Early Childhood Development, while colleges and universities are administered by the Ministry of Post Secondary Education, Training and Labour. The first English-language university in Canada was the University of New Brunswick. Education is managed by the provinces in Canada and there is no federal ministry governing it. At present, the governing body for education in New Brunswick is the Department of Post Secondary Education, Training and Labour, which was headed by the Honourable Danny Soucy. Canada-wide assessments show that with the exception of Manitoba, New Brunswick Grade 8 students lag behind their Canadian counterparts in reading. The average adult literacy score in Canada and New Brunswick is at level two. One in five New Brunswickers (18.5 %) have literacy levels that are below the average.
