Boarding Schools in Quebec

Quebec is the only province having a predominantly French-speaking resident, with French as the sole provincial official language. It is the second most populous province of Canada. Quebec is the largest province by area in Canada, and it is the second-largest administrative division (territory of Nunavut is the largest). It is bordered to the to the east by the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and the province of Newfoundland and Labrador; west by the province of Ontario, James Bay, and Hudson Bay; to the north by Hudson Strait and Ungava Bay; and to the south by the province of New Brunswick and the US states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and New York. It shares maritime borders with Nunavut, Prince Edward Island, and Nova Scotia. After Ontario, Quebec is Canada's second-most populous province. Quebec City is the capital of Quebec and majority of inhabitants live in urban areas near the Saint Lawrence River between Montreal and Quebec City. Situated in the eastern part of Canada, and part of Central Canada, Quebec occupies a territory nearly three times the size of France or Texas, most of which is very sparsely populated. Its topography is very distinct from one region to another because of the varying composition of the ground, the climate (latitude and altitude), and the proximity to water.

Education in Quebec

Quebec has the exclusive power to make its own laws in matters of education. The Ministry of Education, Recreation, and Sports governed the education system in Quebec.  It is managed at the local level by publicly elected French and English school boards. Optional preschool, also known as pre-kindergarten, is available in select inner city areas for children that have reached 4 years of age on September 30 of the school year. Kindergarten  is available province wide for children that have reached 5 years of age on September 30th of the school year. Compulsory elementary education starts with grade 1, through to grade 6. Secondary school comprises of five grades, called secondary I-V (Sec I-V for short) or simply grades 7-11. Students are 12 to 16 years old (age of September 30), unless they repeat a grade. After the completion of grade 11, students receive their high school diploma from the provincial government. According to the Charter of the French Language, in primary and secondary schools all students must attend a French language school. The ministry of education also endeavors to coordinate the orientations and activities of the education community with government policies in general and with the economic, social and cultural needs of Québec society. College education is a particular feature of Québec’s education system, which constitutes an intermediary level between compulsory elementary and secondary education and university education. The literacy rate of Quebec is approximately 53%.
