Boarding Schools in Connecticut

In the New England region of the northeastern United States, Connecticut is the southernmost state. According to the 2010 Census, Connecticut features the highest per-capita income, Human Development Index (0.962), and median household income in the United States. Connecticut is bounded by Rhode Island to the east, Massachusetts to the north, New York to the west, and Long Island Sound to the south. Its capital city is Hartford, and its most populous city is Bridgeport. It is often grouped along with New York and New Jersey as the Tri-state area, although Connecticut is technically part of New England. The state is named for the Connecticut River, a major U.S. river that approximately bisects the state. The word "Connecticut" is derived from various anglicized spellings of an Algonquian word for "long tidal river". Connecticut is the third smallest state by area, the 29th most populous, and the fourth most densely populated of the 50 United States. It is known as the "Constitution State", the "Nutmeg State", the "Provisions State", and the "Land of Steady Habits". The capital city of Connecticut is Hartford and the largest city of the state is Bridgeport. Much of Connecticut has a humid continental climate, with cold winters with frequent snowfall and hot, humid summers.

Education in Connecticut

The Connecticut State Board of Education manages the public school system for children in grades K–12. Board of Education members are appointed by the Governor of Connecticut. Statistics for each school are made available to the public through an online database system called "CEDAR". The CEDAR database also provides statistics for "ACES" or "RESC" schools for children with behavioral disorders. The Connecticut public school system (prekindergarten through grade 12) operates within districts governed by locally elected school boards and superintendents. In 2013, Connecticut had a total of 550,954 students registered in 1,148 schools in 200 school districts. There were 43,931 teachers in the public schools, or roughly one teacher for every 13 students, compared to the national average of 1:16. There was roughly one administrator for every 224 students, compared to the national average of one administrator for every 295 students. On average Connecticut spent $16,631 per pupil in 2012, which ranked it fifth highest in the nation. The state's graduation rate was 85.5% in 2013. Connecticut was home to the nation's first law school, Litchfield Law School, which operated from 1773 to 1833 in Litchfield. Hartford Public High School (1638) is the third-oldest secondary school in the nation after the Collegiate School (1628) in Manhattan and the Boston Latin School (1635).
