The Massachusetts public school system (prekindergarten through grade 12) operates within districts governed by locally elected school boards and superintendents. In 2013, Massachusetts scored highest of all the states in math and third highest in reading on the National Assessment of Educational Progress. Massachusetts is home to 121 institutions of higher education.
