These influences tend to cause warmer winter temperatures along the coast, where temperatures only occasionally drop below the freezing point at night.

North Carolina has 115 public school systems, each of which is supervised by a local school board. In addition, a county may have one or more systems within it. However, approximately 12% of the state's population are adults without a high school credential. Compared with the national average, low literacy is higher among adults in North Carolina. More than 20,000 adults aged 18-25 (approximately 10%) have less than a Grade 9 education.
