The U.S. state Indiana is located in the midwestern and Great Lakes regions of North America. Indiana is the 38th largest by area (with a total area (land and water) of 36,418 square miles (94,320 km2)) and the 16th most populous of the 50 United States. Its capital and largest city is Indianapolis. On December 11, 1816, Indiana was admitted to the United States as the 19th U.S. state. Indiana has a diverse economy with a gross state product of $298 billion in 2012. Indiana has a large number of metropolitan areas with populations more than 100,000 and a number of smaller industrial cities and towns. Indiana is boast of several major sports teams and athletic events including the NFL's Indianapolis Colts, the NBA's Indiana Pacers, the WNBA's Indiana Fever, the Indianapolis 500, and Brickyard 400 motorsports races. The meaning of the Indiana state name is "Land of the Indians", or simply "Indian Land". Indiana is bounded on the north by Michigan, on the east by Ohio, and on the west by Illinois, while Lake Michigan borders Indiana on the northwest and the Ohio River separates Indiana from Kentucky on the south. Indiana has a humid continental climate, with cold winters and hot, wet summers.

Education in Indiana

The Indiana Department of Education supervises K-12 public education in the state of Indiana. Article 8, section 8 of the Indiana Constitution created the Superintendent of Public Instruction to supervise public education. The department managed 1,041,311 students and 1,989 schools during the 2012-2013 school year. The State Board of Education is composed of 11 members, including the Superintendent of Public Instruction. The other 10 members of the board are appointed by the Governor with the consent of the State Senate for four-year terms. Nine members represent each of the congressional districts and one member is an at-large representative. No more than six of the members may be from the same political party, and four of the members must be licensed educators currently employed in an Indiana school. The responsibilities of the board include authorizing the distribution of state education funds to local schools; adopting rules to implement various programs and requirements; determining a school's P.L. 221 performance and improvement category designation; accrediting public and nonpublic schools; and implementing interventions to improve school performance.
