Boarding Schools in Maryland

Maryland is a Mid-Atlantic U.S. state bordering Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington, D.C. to its south and west; Pennsylvania to its north; and Delaware to its east. Baltimore is the largest city and Annapolis is the capital city of Maryland. Old Line State, the Free State, and the Chesapeake Bay State are the occasional nicknames of the state. The state is named after Henrietta Maria of France, the wife of Charles I of England. Maryland is one of the smallest U.S. states in terms of area, as well as one of the most densely populated, with around six million residents. As of 2009, Maryland had the highest median household income of any state, owing in large part to its close proximity to the nation's capital and a highly diversified economy spanning manufacturing, services, and biotechnology. It is the 42nd largest and 9th smallest state and is closest in size to the state of Hawaii (10,930.98 square miles (28,311.1 km2)), the next smallest state. Maryland has a wide array of climates, due to local variances in elevation, proximity to water, and protection from colder weather due to downslope winds.

Education in Maryland

The public school system in Maryland (prekindergarten through grade 12) operates within districts governed by locally elected school boards and superintendents. In 2013, Maryland had 859,638 students enrolled in a total of 1,449 schools in 25 school districts. There were 57,718 teachers in the public schools, or roughly one teacher for every 15 students, compared to the national average of 1:16. There was roughly one administrator for every 244 students, compared to the national average of one administrator for every 295 students. On average Maryland spent $13,829 per pupil in 2013, which ranked it 12th highest in the nation. The state's graduation rate was 85% in 2013. Education Week ranked Maryland number 1 in its nationwide 2009–2013 Quality Counts reports. Primary and secondary education in Maryland is supervised by the Maryland State Department of Education, which is headquartered in Baltimore. The highest educational official in the state is the State Superintendent of Schools, who is appointed by the State Board of Education to a four-year term of office. The Maryland General Assembly has given the Superintendent and State Board autonomy to make educationally related decisions, limiting its own influence on the day-to-day functions of public education. Each county and county-equivalent in Maryland has a local Board of Education charged with running the public schools in that particular jurisdiction.
